How to Choose Between a De-Icer and a Bubbler
1. Water depth threshold: Propeller de-icers (Kasco 2400D, 3400D, 4400D and variants) carry a 4 ft published manufacturer minimum, but we recommend at least 6 ft for a unit to perform the way its coverage figures suggest. In shallower water, choose a linear compressed-air bubble curtain instead.
2. Horsepower sizing: In the 0-19 degree F band, a 1/2 HP unit opens roughly a 50 ft circle, a 3/4 HP unit roughly 70 ft, and a 1 HP unit roughly 80 ft (vertical mount). See the full sizing guide.
3. Amps vs watts: Kasco units publish running current in amps (5.4A for 1/2 HP; 6.6A for 3/4 HP; 9.1A for 1 HP at 120V). Do not treat volt-amperes as true watts without accounting for motor power factor.
