Compressed-Air Bubble Curtain Systems: Verified Specifications

A bubble curtain de-ices by pushing air through perforated tubing on the bottom, lifting deeper water along a line. CanadianPond, the only manufacturer publishing a quantified coverage rule, states open-water width of roughly three times the diffuser depth at -10 to -15 degrees C and twice the depth at -20 to -30 degrees C. Coverage therefore scales with depth, which is why these systems are not a shallow-water answer.

How much open water will a bubble curtain hold?

This is the figure that did not exist in public until now, at least not with its assumptions attached. CanadianPond publishes it for their Thawline system:

Read what that rule implies, because it inverts the usual assumption. Coverage is a function of depth. A curtain at 4 ft opens perhaps 12 ft of water in moderate cold; the same tubing at 12 ft opens perhaps 36 ft. Nothing about the compressor changes. The rising bubbles have further to travel and entrain more water on the way up.

That is the opposite of a propeller de-icer, whose published coverage depends on motor size and gets no help from extra depth beyond the minimum. It is also why a bubble curtain in genuinely shallow water disappoints: there is no column for the bubbles to work in.

What depth does a bubble curtain need?

CanadianPond states Thawline systems work best in 4 to 20 ft of water, and that placing the tubing in less than 2 ft may reduce de-icing effectiveness and increase the risk of damaging the tubing.

A correction worth making plainly: bubble curtains are widely described, including in earlier versions of this site, as the answer for shallow water. The manufacturer's own figures do not support that framing. A bubble curtain tolerates shallower water than a propeller de-icer, because it does not depend on a warm bottom layer being present. But its coverage scales with depth, and below about 2 ft it is out of its envelope too. In water that shallow, neither technology performs, and the honest answer is that the site is difficult rather than that one product solves it.

The real distinction between the two technologies is not shallow versus deep. It is linear versus radial, and no electricity in the water versus a submerged motor. See dock bubblers vs de-icers.

How big a compressor do I need?

CanadianPond publishes compressor pairings by total tubing length, including the maximum feeder-line run from compressor to water.

The packaged Thawline kits pair slightly differently, one compressor size up: the 50 ft kit ships a 1/2 HP double-piston compressor (115 V, 4 A, 5.5 CFM, 50 psi) and the 100 ft kit ships a 3/4 HP (115 V, 5.4 A, 7.4 CFM, 50 psi), both with a 2-year warranty. If you size from the general tubing table rather than the kit list, you will specify one compressor size smaller than the manufacturer ships.

For reference, Kasco's Teich-Aire compressors are rated: KM-60C (1/4 HP oilless rocking piston) 3.2 A at 20 psi on 115 V, 3.4 CFM at 5 psi falling to 2.7 CFM at 25 psi, up to 2 diffuser heads; KM-120C (1/2 HP) 4.0 A at 20 psi on 115 V, 4.9 CFM at 5 psi falling to 4.0 CFM at 25 psi, up to 3 heads. Note how much flow is lost as back-pressure rises. That is depth working against you, and it is why compressor selection is about CFM at your working pressure, not peak CFM.

What pressure can the tubing take?

Here the manufacturer's own documents disagree, and the safe reading is the conservative one.

Practical guidance: treat 50 psi as the working ceiling unless your installation uses whip socks, and do not run a bubbler from an unregulated shop compressor. The owner's manual warns against exactly that, and a shop compressor's cut-out pressure will comfortably exceed anything the tubing is rated for.

What does installation involve?

More than dropping a hose in the water, and the details are where these systems fail.

Tubing is supplied in weighted and non-weighted forms in 25, 50, 100, 198 (60 m) and 328 ft (100 m) rolls. Perforations are factory-made on both sides along the full length. Note that no manufacturer document states the perforation spacing, so any spacing figure you see quoted is unsourced.

Why do reseller figures for bubblers vary so much?

Because most of them are not measurements. This is worth one concrete example.

A widely-cited retailer guide states that dock bubbler tubing needs 0.01 CFM per foot at 3 psi — that is 1 CFM for 100 ft. CanadianPond, the manufacturer, specifies 5.5 CFM for 100 ft of 1/2 in Bubble Tubing at a 25 to 30 psi minimum. The reseller figure is roughly 5.5 times low on flow and 8 to 10 times low on pressure.

The two may describe genuinely different products, since the retailer describes die-cut slits every 24 in rather than microperforations, but no manufacturer source anywhere corroborates 0.01 CFM per foot. Size a compressor from that number and it will not open ice. This is the same pattern documented on the Kasco 4400D page, where large retailers still publish superseded amperage and thrust figures.

Verification status: All coverage, depth, compressor, pressure, and installation figures above are attributed to the manufacturer that publishes them — CanadianPond (Bubble Tubing, Thawline) and Kasco Marine (Teich-Aire). Where a manufacturer's own documents disagree, both figures are shown rather than one being chosen silently. Perforation spacing is not published by any manufacturer source and is therefore not stated here. This page previously carried no specifications at all, because none had been verified; these were obtained on 2026-08-23.
