De-Icers for Duck Hunting: Decoy Spreads, Blind Holes, and Off-Grid Power
A de-icer keeps a decoy spread or blind hole open by circulating water faster than it can freeze, and the moving surface adds the ripple that a frozen spread lacks. Waterfowl use is harder than dock use for one reason: marsh water is usually shallower than the 4 ft minimum depth every major manufacturer specifies, so you are operating outside the rated envelope and should size and rig accordingly.

Why is waterfowl de-icing different from dock de-icing?top
Because the physics a de-icer depends on mostly is not available to you.
A propeller de-icer does not heat water. It lifts the warmest water in the system, which in winter sits on the bottom, up to the surface. Fresh water is densest at 39.2 degrees F, so a lake inverts in winter: coldest water and ice on top, water near 39 F resting on the bottom. A dock de-icer in 8 ft of water is mining a genuine thermal reservoir.
A marsh in 2 ft of water has no such reservoir. The column is too shallow to stratify and wind mixes what little gradient forms. The unit is still useful, but it is doing mechanical work: keeping water moving so ice cannot knit, rather than delivering warmth from below. That difference drives everything else on this page.
Kasco states the constraint in its own manual: de-icing "can also become less effective in extremely shallow conditions," and no de-icer can prevent damage where ice forms to the bottom or where bottom water is the same temperature as the water under the ice.
Do I need an "ice eater" specifically?top
No. ICE EATER is a registered trademark of Bearon Aquatics, not a product category. It has drifted into generic use to the point that "ice eater duck hunting" is one of the most common ways this equipment gets searched for, but the machine you are looking for is a propeller de-icer, and Kasco, Scott Aerator, U.S. Solar Mounts and Bearon all make one.

How do I open and hold a decoy spread?top
Two jobs at once: hold open water, and put motion on it. A dead-flat hole in the ice reads as wrong from the air; a rippled one does not.
Work the placement from the manufacturer's own logic, adapted for shallow water:
- Set the unit as deep as the water honestly allows, then come up. Kasco's guidance for dock installs is 4-6 ft deep vertical and slightly shallower when angled, and never less than 1 ft off the bottom to keep debris out of the prop. In a marsh the 1 ft bottom clearance is the rule that still applies and the one most often broken.
- Angle it rather than hanging it vertical. An angled unit throws an oblong pocket along the surface instead of a circle, which is the shape a spread wants, and it keeps the plume off the bottom.
- Aim downwind. Wind will drift your opening anyway; working with it holds a larger pocket for the same power.
- Bring warm water from the deepest water you have. Kasco's own advice for shallow installs is to angle the unit from the deeper area toward the shallow area. In a marsh that usually means setting up in the channel or hole and pushing toward the spread.
For the open-water area you can expect, use the published coverage matrix, but read it as an upper bound. It assumes over 4 ft of depth and unobstructed water, and you have neither. A 1/2 HP unit at 0 to 19 degrees F is published at 25 x 60 ft angled. In 2 ft of vegetated marsh, expect materially less.

What about a blind hole in shallow marsh?top
A blind hole is the hardest case on this page. It is usually the shallowest water you will work in, often the weediest, and it needs to stay open in front of the blind rather than wherever the wind wants it.
- Expect mechanical circulation only. There is no warm bottom layer to mine. The unit is fighting ice with movement.
- Do not blast the bottom. A unit set too low in soft marsh silt will cloud the water and can scour a hole, and the suspended sediment does nothing for you. The 1 ft bottom clearance matters more here than anywhere.
- Consider a curtain to concentrate the opening. Kasco publishes a curtain technique for this: drape a canvas tarp as a curtain in the water, tied above the waterline and weighted at the bottom, hanging a few feet down. Folding the tarp over a length of chain is an effective way to weight it. It blocks flow in the directions you do not need and holds the open water where you want it. In a blind hole that can be the difference between an open shooting lane and a vaguely soft patch of ice.
How do I rig a de-icer with no dock to mount to?top
Every mount kit the manufacturers sell assumes a dock, a piling, or a seawall. In a marsh you have none of those, so rigging is the part you improvise, within limits set by the equipment.
One rule is firm: if you are suspending the unit on ropes, the suspension lines must be spread at least 8 ft apart. Kasco states this explicitly, and the reason is not stability. The motor's starting torque will twist lines that hang too close together, and a twisted line can damage the power cord. On a de-icer, a damaged cord is not a warranty claim: cuts in the power cord are excluded.

Kasco's own mount kits, Universal (1 in nominal pipe, kit 243485) and Industrial (1.5 in nominal pipe, kit 243484), both require customer-supplied pipe, which is a recurring surprise at the counter. Both are rated for units up to 1 HP, and a Simple Swivel version of each is available (243478 and 243479) that lets you rotate the unit to re-aim without re-rigging. If you can drive a post, a pipe-mounted unit is far easier to aim repeatably than any rope rig.
How do I set the angle?top
There is a specific method for this. The obvious approach, re-tying a knot shorter on one side, is not the one Kasco describes.
Kasco's procedure for suspended operation: leave both knots alone, and instead change where one line crosses the cage. Loop that line around the top circular band and across one to four vertical cage wires. That moves the support off centre so the unit hangs at a tilt. Under power it swings up to an angle and holds it there. More cage wires means more angle; Kasco does not recommend going past four.
This is a field-adjustable setting. If your pocket is opening in the wrong place, move the line a wire at a time rather than re-rigging.
What can I run a de-icer from off the grid?top
This is where waterfowl use diverges hardest from dock use, and where most published advice is wrong because it uses the wrong number.
Amps are not watts
Manufacturers publish amps. Multiply by volts and you get apparent power in VA, not watts. Those are equal only at a power factor of 1.0, and induction motors of this class run well below that. A Kasco 2400D at 120V and 5.4 A is 648 VA. Its true consumption in watts is lower, by a margin that is not published for these motors. A battery-runtime figure built on the amp rating will therefore overstate the load.

Locked rotor amps
For off-grid use, running current is the wrong spec anyway. What sizes your generator or inverter is locked rotor amps, the inrush when the motor starts. Kasco publishes these in the de-icer manual and nowhere else:

The 4400D row is the one to note. A 1 HP unit that runs at 9.1 A pulls 40 A at startup on a 120V circuit. A generator or inverter sized to the running figure will trip or stall on start, and it is a common off-grid failure. Size the generator or inverter to the inrush figure rather than the running figure.
Practical consequences
- Use a pure sine wave inverter or inverter generator. Modified sine drives induction motors hot and inefficiently.
- Give yourself surge headroom. Many inverters quote a surge rating separate from continuous; that surge rating is the one that has to clear the locked rotor figure.
- Prefer the smallest unit that does the job. On a battery, the 1/2 HP 2400D is not just lower draw than the 4400D. It is a 20 A inrush instead of 40 A, which changes what inverter you can get away with.
- Every restart costs you. Anything that cycles the motor, whether a thermostat, a timer, or a duty-cycling controller, pays the inrush again on each start. Duty cycling to save average power is a real technique, but the saving is smaller than a naive calculation suggests, and controller manufacturers should be asked for measured figures rather than percentages.
How do I stop it clogging in vegetation?top
Cattail, milfoil, and loose bottom debris are the practical failure mode in a marsh, and a clogged de-icer does not just stop working. It overheats.
Kasco's thermal overload will shut the motor off and restart it automatically once it cools, which is a symptom to investigate rather than a feature to rely on. The manual is explicit: a unit that keeps turning itself off and back on should be unplugged immediately, because the overload will keep cycling until it burns out and damages the motor. If your unit is cycling, something is wrong: low water, a fouled prop, or buildup blocking heat dissipation. It needs to come out of the water.
- Check it daily if you can. Kasco recommends daily observation for any change in performance.
- Always disconnect power before clearing a clog.
- The usual culprits are fishing line and plastic bags wrapped on the shaft, not weed.
- The motor housing sheds heat into the water. Algae and calcium buildup insulate it, so the unit runs hotter. Clean the housing at least once a year.
- A clog-resistant prop guard genuinely helps in vegetated water. Kasco's AquatiClear line uses a guard designed for debris passage, trading 1-2 lbs of thrust at the same amp draw for that clog resistance.
What does the warranty cover for this use?top
Worth knowing before you rig something clever. Kasco's D-Series carries a 3-year warranty, but it excludes the ropes, the power cord, and the propeller, which are the three parts a marsh rig is hardest on.
The warranty is void if:
- The unit is not used with a GFCI control box
- The sacrificial anode is allowed to deteriorate significantly (replace it at half its original size, or if it turns white)
- The unit is returned without the power cord, or the unit, cord, or control box was altered from original shipment; cuts in the power cord are not covered at all
- The unit was not maintained per the manual
The practical reading for waterfowl use: run a GFCI even off a generator, never splice or shorten the cord, never lift or drag the unit by the cord, and pull the anode into your pre-season check.
Is the ice around a de-iced spread safe to walk on?top
No, and this is the section that matters most.
A de-icer works by destroying the ice sheet locally. It leaves a margin of thin, weak, undermined ice around the opening that can look continuous from any distance, and moving water thins ice well past the visible edge of the hole. In a marsh, snow cover hides the transition entirely.
- Never enter the water with the unit connected or operating. Kasco states this without qualification, and it applies whether the unit is running off shore power or a generator.
- Use GFCI protection and test it monthly. Only one GFCI in a circuit. If it trips repeatedly, disconnect and remove the unit from the water.
- Do not wear waders in deep or soft-bottomed water, and do not use a tippy boat such as a canoe to set or retrieve the unit.
- Mark the open water. Kasco recommends any ice-free area be well marked. On water anyone else might cross, that is not optional.
- Retrieving a unit through deteriorating ice at the end of the season is the highest-risk moment in the whole cycle. Plan it for solid ice or open water, not the transition.
