How Much Electricity Does a Dock De-Icer Use?

A one-horsepower dock de-icer draws between roughly 600 and 1,100 volt-amperes. At a typical US residential electricity rate this works out to a rough estimated range of about $60 to $120 per month for continuous operation, though the true cost depends on the motor's real power factor and your local electricity rate. Automated thermostat or timer controls can meaningfully reduce that cost.

Amps vs Watts: Apparent Power vs Real Power

Manufacturers publish electrical current in amperes, not true real power in watts. Multiplying volts by amps gives apparent power in volt-amperes (VA). Real power in watts equals volts times amps times the power factor. Single-phase induction motors commonly run at a power factor between about 0.75 and 0.88 under continuous fluid load, so treating published VA figures as if they were watts overstates true active power draw.
