Run-Cost Calculator

Monthly electricity cost for a running de-icer, by unit size and local rate.

Status: not published. Manufacturers in this category publish amps, not watts, and real power cannot be derived from an amp rating without a measured power factor. Publishing a cost figure built on apparent power would overstate consumption by an unknown margin. See power draw and running cost for what can honestly be said today.

Why there is no run-cost calculator

Volts times amps gives apparent power in VA. That equals real power in watts only when the power factor is 1.0, and induction motors of this class run well below that. A 1 HP 4400D at 120V and 9.1 A works out to 1,092 VA, but its true consumption in watts is lower by a margin that is not published for these motors.

The same problem appears in the U.S. Solar Mounts line, where a Slinger De-Icer is listed at 115V, 10 A and 680 W. Those figures imply a power factor near 0.59, which is low but not impossible, or alternatively that 680 W is rated shaft output rather than input. Those are very different numbers for a cost calculator, and the discrepancy is unresolved. See the U.S. Solar Mounts reference.

The honest position is that this tool cannot be built correctly yet. It will be published when measured power data exists, not before.
